Piper Perabo in "Lost and Delirious"

I just finished watching this film and quite honestly it's a lot more than I expected it would be. In a word, it's draining. Piper Perabo, however, is exceptional. Her range of emotions so gut wrenching I couldn't help being drawn into all that was happening.
Give me an all girls prep school with plaid pleated skirts, a cute math teacher and secreted love and I'm on board! But this story, whether you look from the point of view of Mary, the hapless narrator or the vile, menipulative, treachorous Tory or that of love sick, obsessed Polly, it's all very hard to take. Although there are several very touching romantic scenes as well as some beautiful cinematography I resented the fact that Polly's suicide was imminent from the first uttering of bird based foreshadowing in her desire to fly away with the bird for whom she so tenderly cared. I was left to sit through it all and just wait for her demise; a wicked, spiraling, descent into her own insanity. This film literally made me nauseous. The story, which started out so light, so promising, with Polly as a love struck, mischevious, vixen ultimately seeks to portray the self destructive path of loving another human being more than you love yourself within the context of the fragile complexity of adolescent youth. I know why this film struck a cord with me and it is because on occasion I work with girls in this age group in a similar setting. I hope if ever I were in a situation with a student like Polly that it wouldn't end in tragedy. I know I will never forget this film and for that it was well worth watching. But only once.

I totally agree with your points.
I watched it recently for the first time, and while it didn't make me nauseous, I did feel immensely sympathetic towards Polly as the film moved to its finale. You just want to reach in and help her.

Yes, that's exactly right. The head mistress's and the math teacher's response, just sitting back on the sidelines, not allowing themselves to respond or get pulled in really bugged me.
I'm just the opposite in that I get pulled in too easily, too quickly, I have a lot of empathy for others. I really didn't expect to have such a strong reaction to this film, but I did.
MY alternate ending for "Lost and Delirious" would be Polly gets all the help she needs to move through her crisis and emerges a stronger, grounded woman. She grows up and meets someone like Luce in IMAY.

My sentiment as well. I was utterly exhausted after viewing this film and I can't imagine torturing myself (through Polly's heart-felt pain) again! "Imagine Me and You", however, ignited an entirely different set of emotions. Although, I felt for Heck and his prospective loss, I was literally engulfed by Rachel's and Luce's passionate connection! The movie left me desiring more of them...

I completely agree with what you're saying - the first time I watched it I was crying and have never been so emotionally tired at the end of the film.
However, I am being picky here, but it was Pauley (short for Pauline) not Polly. Sorry for nitpicking but it bugged me :S
Tell me about the lily.
The lily means ... the lily means I dare you to love me
